FAQs

What are the steps involved in making handmade ceramics?
All my pieces begin as a ball of stoneware clay, which is wedged by hand to remove air bubbles and ensure the clay's the perfect consistency to throw with. The clay is then thrown on a potter's wheel to create the form, before being left to dry overnight. The piece is then put back on the wheel, and excess clay is trimmed away using sharp turning tools to refine it further - it's at this point that any attachments, such as handles, are attached. The piece is then left to dry slowly until it's completely bone dry, before being bisque fired in the kiln to almost 1,000°c. After that, it's sanded, rinsed and glazed, before going back into the kiln for a final firing to 1220°c. It's a long process, with many steps where things can go wrong, but there's something magic about seeing a finished piece come out of the kiln!
